October is Archaeology Month in Mississippi!

Archaeology month activities include public talks on archaeology and archaeological methods, visits to ongoing archaeological fieldwork projects, site tours, and even fieldwork opportunities. All events are free and open to the public. Listed below are some of the activities scheduled. Additional programs and updates will be posted here as they become finalized.

Mound Tour of the South Delta
Tour will start and end at the Pocahontas Mound visitor center on Hwy. 49 N
There is no charge for the tour. Tour covers 150 miles so fill up before we depart. We will carpool for this tour. Lunch will be at Chuck’s Dairy Bar in Rolling Fork. Meal prices there run from $6 to $15.

EVENTS
• Pascagoula's Playful Pursuit
o What: A fun-filled scavenger hunt organized by Let's Roam.
o Location: Begins near the Round Island Lighthouse in Pascagoula.
o When: Monday, October 27, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. (Note: This is after the official International Archaeology Day, but part of the month-long observation).
o Details: The event is designed as a playful pursuit of local history and points of interest. You can find more information and tickets on Eventbrite.
• Old Biloxi Cemetery Tour cleanup
o What: The cleanup involves volunteers raking leaves, bagging debris, and washing headstones in preparation for the annual cemetery tour. This is a historical preservation effort rather than a formal archaeological dig.
o Location: Old Biloxi Cemetery, 1166 Irish Hill Drive, Biloxi.
o When: Friday, October 10, 2025, 9:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
o Historical context: The Old Biloxi Cemetery is a historically significant site that includes the graves of notable Biloxi residents like "The Mad Potter" George Ohr and War of 1812 hero Juan de Cuevas. It contains tombstones dating back to at least 1811. The annual tour highlights the city's artistic and historical legacy.
• Beauvoir Fall Muster
o Dates: October 17-19, 2025 · Location: Beauvoir, The Jefferson Davis Home and Presidential Library, Biloxi, MS
o Activities: Living historians in period costume, Cannon firings and battle reenactments, Period music, Vendors and food, A Ladies' Tea, School day for students on Friday.
o Admission: Adults are $20 daily or $30 for a weekend pass. Children 6-17 are $7 daily or $10 for a weekend pass. Children 5 and under are free.

• Exploring Genealogy
o Date: Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at 10 a.m..
o Location: Margaret Reed Crosby Memorial Library, 900 Goodyear Boulevard, Picayune, MS.
o Description: This event may be of interest to those passionate about uncovering local history. Genealogist Patti Hobbs will discuss how land records can preserve hidden stories.

• La Pointe–Krebs House and Museum
o Located in Pascagoula, this site is home to the oldest building in Mississippi and features a museum with artifacts from the property and the surrounding area.
o What you'll find: Exhibits cover the history of the Krebs family and the site, with timelines and artifacts that provide insight into local history dating back to the 1700s.
o Address: 4602 Fort St., Pascagoula, MS 39567.

 Hours: Monday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and Sunday, 12 p.m.–5 p.m..
 Event: "Diamond Days - 75th Anniversary Celebration," a three-day event in September 2025, will celebrate the museum's history with historical relics on display. While this occurs before October, the museum will have many of these artifacts available for regular viewing in October.

• Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum
o Situated in Biloxi, this museum preserves the maritime history of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and includes artifacts and information on the area's early inhabitants and the seafood industry.
o What you'll find: The museum features exhibits on regional history, boat building, and the local seafood industry. The displays include period artifacts and historical context that give a glimpse into the region's past.

 What you'll see: Exhibits include artifacts related to the region's historical relationship with its coastal waters.

• Beauvoir, Jefferson Davis Home & Presidential Library
o Located in Biloxi, this historical estate and museum offers educational tours that include the house and grounds.
o What you'll find: While the primary focus is on Jefferson Davis and the Civil War era, the museum and tours offer insight into a pivotal period of Mississippi's history through artifacts and exhibits.

• Fort Massachusetts on Ship Island
o What: Located on a barrier island 12 miles offshore, this historic fort was constructed in the mid-19th century and remains well preserved. It was occupied during the Civil War and has been the site of archaeological work.
o Details for October 2025:
 Access: The island is accessible via Ship Island Excursions ferry service, which runs seasonally through October. The ferry departs from Gulfport.
 Touring the fort: You can take a free guided tour with a National Park Service ranger or use the NPS app for a self-guided tour.
 October schedule: Ranger-led tours run once daily during the fall. Ferry departure times will be available closer to the date on the Ship Island Excursions website.
